Virgil S. Heitmeyer, 80, 223 S. Meadowlane Drive, Sidney, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2016 at Hospice of Miami County in Troy following a short illness. He was born April 24, 1936 in Columbus Grove, Ohio, the son of Walter and Martha (Hedrick) Heitmeyer who are deceased. He married Joan Pitson on October 25, 1958 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Continental, Ohio and she survives along with their four sons, Gary Heitmeyer and wife Angie; Dan Heitmeyer and wife Jill; Chris Heitmeyer and Tony Heitmeyer, all of Sidney. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Nick (Bailey) Heitmeyer, Ashley (Eric) Leach, Jennifer Heitmeyer, Caroline Heitmeyer, Megan Heitmeyer, Ryan Heitmeyer, BT (Amy) Landrum, TJ (Mark) Bales, and Tracey Landrum; eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rosemary Wasserman of Lansing, Kansas; and Alice Swetland of Ottawa, Ohio; two brothers, Donald (Eleanor) Heitmeyer of Ottawa, Ohio; and Eugene (Anne) Heitmeyer of Columbus Grove, Ohio; and beloved dog, Ollie. Mr. Heitmeyer was a 1954 graduate of St. Peter and Paul Catholic School in Ottawa, Ohio. After high school, he joined the United States Air Force where he was a jet mechanic. He served in the Korean War and was voted Airman of the Month. Virg, Jo and sons settled in Sidney, where he continued his electrical career with the Sidney Electric Company, retiring in 1998 after 35 years. He loved fishing, boating, woodworking, traveling, volunteering, NASCAR, Ohio State football, Reds baseball and spending time with Jo, his children, grandchildren and other family and friends. Virgil was a member of American Legion Post 217 in Sidney, and was an honorary lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Sidney Council 659 where he was a past Grand Knight and Knight of the Year. He was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sidney where he previously served on the building and grounds committee and volunteered for years at the annual parish picnic. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Angels Catholic Church on Friday, May 13, 2016 at 10:30 AM with Virg’s nephew, Father Jim Morman officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Graceland Cemetery, Sidney. Friends may call at Salm-McGill and Tangeman Funeral Home in Sidney on Thursday, May 12, 2016 from 4-8 PM and from 9-10 AM at the funeral home on Friday, May 13, 2016. The Knights of Columbus will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Thursday at 7:45 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Angels Catholic Church, 324 S. Ohio Ave., Sidney, Ohio 45365 or Lehman Catholic High School, 2400 St. Mary’s Ave., Sidney, Ohio 45365. Envelopes will also be available at the funeral home.
