Louis "Skip" Lowien Obituary

Louis “Skip” W. Lowien, 68, Russia, Ohio passed away at the Kettering Medical Center, Kettering, Ohio on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at 5:15 PM.  He was born May 7, 1945 in Dyersburg, Tennessee the son of Clarence William Lowien Jr. and Virginia Rose (Short) Lowien and raised in Port Clinton, Ohio.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Tana (Sztuk) in 2010.  Skip and Tana were both graduates of Port Clinton High School Class of 1963.  Skip and Tana (Sztuk) were married in Port Clinton in 1966.  He is survived by a son, Patrick and his wife Dana (Hellmich) and three granddaughters, Anna, Emily, and Elise and they reside in Maryland.  Skip will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and former co-workers.  Skip was employed at Emerson Climate Technologies (Copeland Corporation) in Sidney, Ohio for more than 33 years.  He was a United States Army veteran Staff Sergeant receiving a Joint Service Commendation Medal for his efforts on assignment in Bangkok, Thailand (1967-69).  Skip was a 1972 graduate of the Ohio State University.  Over the years he has enjoyed camping, fishing, photography, gardening (especially tulips), and golf.  Since retiring in 2012 he also has spent time volunteering in various local activities that support and serve less fortunate people in the Sidney, Ohio area.  Catholic faith was important to both Skip and Tana.  They were members of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sidney, Ohio for many years.  They also sought other means and avenues to learn about their faith.  They became oblates of the Community of St. John in 1999, a religious order originally formed in France.  Both Skip and Tana took on roles supporting the Community of St. John with Tana sewing habits for the brothers, and Skip (not a seamstress) going on “working retreats” performing building maintenance to help support the Community.  They also participated in numerous religious pilgrimages with the Community in the United States and overseas to France in 2008 when they visited places where the Community of St. John brothers and sisters have their religious studies as well as the Community’s mother-house.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sidney on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Daniel Hess.  Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery, Port Clinton, Ohio on Friday, February 21, 2014 at 11:30 AM.  Friends may call at Salm-McGill and Tangeman Funeral Home in Sidney on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 4-8 PM.  Memorial contributions may be made to either the Community of St. John, St. Joseph Priory, 11223 W.
