Helen Smith Obituary

Helen Rose Smith, 92, formerly of Anna, Ohio died at Dorothy Love Retirement Community, Sidney, Ohio on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 9:15 AM. She was born on January 14, 1918 in Lima, Ohio the daughter of Camillo and Anna (Pieraccini) Cardone and they are deceased. She was a graduate of St. John's Catholic High School, class of 1936. She married James F. 'Smitty' Smith Sr. on March 30, 1939. Her husband's job on the B and O Railroad brought them to Anna, Ohio where they resided for 58 years. Helen loved to be involved with all her children's activities and was forever volunteering her time. In later life she became an avid bowler and bowled on several championship teams both in Sidney and Florida. Helen's love of sewing turned to quilt making and over the course of the next 12 years she hand stitched a dozen appliqué quilts. For the past 5 years, she and her husband have lived at Dorothy Love Retirement Community. The family expresses our heartfelt 'thanks' to Dr. Miller and all the staff at Dorothy Love for making those years such pleasant ones for Helen. She loved all of you and your caring ways making the past few weeks peaceful. Helen was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McCartyville for 64 years and was a member of the Altar Rosary Society at the church. She last worked at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney in the dietary department and retired in 1973. The family expresses it's sincere 'thanks' to Father John Tonkin for his spiritual support and to the eucharistics ministers who never failed to bring communion to mom and dad every week. Helen is survived by her devoted husband of 71 years, James F. Smith Sr., a daughter, Patricia (George) Koehl of Hertford, North Carolina and a son, James F. 'Bud' Smith Jr. and wife Virginia of Tipp City, Ohio. Also a sister-in-law, Mrs. Juanita Wright of Troy, Ohio and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George Snowden of Sidney. Also surviving are six grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, and her sisters, Josephine Lucchesi, Mary Cash and Rita Mustaine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McCartyville, Ohio with Rev. John Tonkin. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 AM until the hour of service and burial will follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Salm-McGill and Tangeman Funeral Home in Sidney is handling the funeral arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Building Fund, 9333 St. Route 119 West, Anna, Ohio 45302; Dorothy Love Life Care Fund, 3003 W. Cisco Rd., Sidney, Ohio 45365 or Wilson Home Health and Hospice, 915 W. Michigan St., Sidney, Ohio 45365. Envelopes will be available at the church.
