Dean Stuhlmueller Obituary

Dean C. Stuhlmueller, professionally known as Dean Miller, who anchored (NBC Detroit) Channel 4's nightly newscasts in the early 70's, died of cancer January 13th at his home in Grosse Pointe. He was 79. Mr. Miller anchored the 6 and 11 pm news alongside weathercaster Sonny Elliot from 1971-1975. He also substituted for (Detroit) Channel 50's "Bill Kennedy at the Movies" while Mr. Kennedy was absent. He also hosted a show called "The Golden Years of Television". (Nationally) He has an impressive film and television career in Hollywood during the 50's and 60's. He may be best known for palying architect Matt Henshaw on the 50's hit sitcom "December Bride." The series ran on CBS from 1954 to 1961. Other television included NBC's celebrity interview series "Here's Hollywood" and game shows "Choose Up Sides" and "There's one in Every Family." An MGM film career kept Mr. Miller busy as well. His movies included "Skirts Ahoy," "Dream Wife," "Because You're Mine," "Everything I Have Is Yours," "Small Town Girl," "Fearless Fagan," and "Girl Who Had Everything." Dean was born in Hamilton, Ohio. He was the son of Dr. Clifford and Marie Stuhlmueller and brother Richard...all of Hamilton and all whom are deceased.) He attended Ohio State University, began his career in radio sales, shortly after, moved into television. His "lucky break" came when he was traveling by train to Hollywood, CA and met the president of MGM, Doris Sherry. After chatting for a while, Sherry asked Miller if he would be interested in a screen test. A contract was quickly signed thus beginning an exciting career. Mr. Miller was also a World War II veteran. He owned radio station WMVR-FM in Sidney, Ohio for almost 40 years. He is survived by his wife, Ida (Wagner) of Grosse Pointe Wood; daughter Toni "Miller" McGill of Grosse Pointe - a former radio morning news anchor at what was W4Country FM (Detroit); sons Dean Jr of Harper Woods, MI, and Mark, of Cleveland, Ohio. He also has six grandchildren. His hobbies included golf, photography and a love of politics. Visition in Grosse Pointe, Michigan will be on Friday, January 16, 2004 from 1-9 PM at the Chas. Verheyden Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2004 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Grosse Pointe Woods at 10:00 AM. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan. Sidney, Ohio services include visitation at Salm-McGill and Tangeman Funeral Home on Monday, January 19, 2004 from 9-10 am. A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 AM at Holy Angels Catholic Church with Rev. Gerald Bensman. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, Sidney, Ohio.
