Barbara J. Dowell

Barbara J. Dowell, 72, Sidney, Ohio, passed away at the Versailles Health Care Center, Versailles, Ohio on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 2:55 AM due to cancer.   She was born in Sidney, Ohio and was preceded in death by parents, Ben and Gertrude Dowell.   She graduated from Sidney High School in 1962 and went on to obtain business training at Miami Jacobs and Sinclair Community College.   She was a United States Army veteran, serving on tour of duty with the WAC in the mid-1960's.  She was a member of the Sidney Eastern Star and is a past Worthy Matron of the Sidney lodge.   Barb was active in the local Red Cross early in her life and later became a member of the American Legion of Sidney.   Except for her military tour of duty and a brief stay in Russia, Ohio, she lived her whole life in Sidney.   She was a valued and faithful member of the Sidney First Presbyterian Church throughout her life, serving as elder, Adult Sunday School teacher, choir member and an active participant in the women's ministry.   Barb also served on several committees at the presbytery level, including the Network and Grants Committee and the Committee for the Preparation of Pastoral Ministry throughy the Presbytery of the Miami Valley.   She was also a reader of ordination exams for seminary students from all over the eastern United States.   Left to mourn her passing are her brother, George Dowell of Huber Heights, Ohio; niece, Kathryn Dowell and family in Dayton, Ohio; step-nephew, Robert Lentz in Virginia, relatives in Paulding, Ohio; her church family and special friend, Kim Reeder of Sidney.   Friends may call at Salm-McGill and Tangeman Funeral Home in Sidney on Sunday, Ocotober 22, 2017 from 1:00 until 3:00 PM.   An Eastern Star service will be held at the funeral home at 2:45 PM.   Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 23, 2017 at 10:00 AM at the Sidney First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Diana Circelli.   Burial will follow with full military honors at Graceland Cemetery, Sidney.   Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Memorial Fund.   Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.   Condolences may be expressed on Salm-McGill and Tangeman Funeral Home's web site at:   www.salm-mcgillandtangemanfh.com
