Dear Mary, Michael, Christa, and Stephanie,

Warmth, caring and sympathy is sent to all of you on the loss of your husband and father during this blessed Christmas Season!

I am the younger sister of Vonnie Gerland Bennett, a classmate of Spiros. I remember well your when Spiros arrived in the United States – he lived on the same block and almost kitty corner across the alley. To me, he represented a world that was large because he had come such a long way. He was also also an example that the world was small because he was just like the rest of us (but with a very special accent that I envied).

Your Father lived the American Dream and he shared it with all. He accomplished so much in his lifetime. He was well-educated, always thoughtful, and a man of faith. It showed in all that he did, and the way he treated others. Just last week, my brother and I were talking about your family and his plans to visit Spiros on his way to the East Coast for a Gerland Family Reunion.

Spiros was a proud American and we were proud that he chose to emigrate and become “one of us”. He will be missed by many.

Thanks for sharing your husband and father with his many friends.

You are in our thoughts and prayers,

Sandy Gerland Schley

So sorry for your loss...Spike as we called him while he worked at Copeland was a very stickler for things getting completed. He had the greatest accent which was wonderful to listen to him talk. Spike didn't know a stranger and would say "Hi" to anyone that spoke to him. God took this special person on the day he was born and he was a Christmas angel who will be watching over all of his family until he meets them again in Heaven.

In 1972 I coached an amateur baseball team in Sidney sponsored by Copeland Corporation. After the season, they treated us to chicken dinners at Hussey's in Port Jefferson. Representing the company was Spiros "Spike" Jannides, and it was the first time we met. At that time I knew he came from Greece and had married into the family that had owned the legendary Purity in downtown Sidney where I used to enjoy Boston Nut Sundaes. I came to know him as a fine gentleman with a special story about coming to America.

He lived a wonderful life. May his family be comforted by many splendid memories.

Spike was truly one of a kind. Whenever he subbed at Ft. Loramie School, regardless of the subject matter, he always found a way to relate it to his Greek heritage. His expertise was definitely a breath of fresh air! Not a day of subbing went by that he didn't pull out photos of his grandchildren for me to see. He was such a kind, loving man!!! My heart aches for his family. May knowing how much he was loved by others will help somewhat. I will be praying for your peace.

RIP my friend. I had the honor of working with "Spike" together on many projects for over 30 years. His approach to work was unbelievable. The man never took a day off in all the years we worked together. When he "scheduled" a day of vacation, he would be in his office working just like any other day. Truly was a proud company employee that everyone enjoyed working with. After retiring regardless of where I would see him, we would always have to take a few minutes and catch up on life. He would always have to tell me about his family and the grandkids. He truly loved his days filling as a teacher in the Fort Loramie School System.

Dear Christa, Stephanie and Family,

I am so deeply sorry for your loss. There is nothing that can prepare you for a loss of a parent, and the loss is profound. I know your family is so close, and hopefully that can provide some comfort for all of you as you move through this process. I will be thinking of all of you and please let me know if there is any way I can provide some support.

I worked with Spike at Copeland Corporation. He was joyful man who never knew a stranger, he had a wonderful sense of humor and would make anyone feel at home there. He was an asset to the company and the community of Sidney as well. He will be missed by many, we are all better for having known him.
My sincerest sympathies to the family.
We will miss you "Spike"!!!!

These comments are from Melba Bender as told to her daughter, Marcia:

I worked in First Aid at Copeland's, and Spike was my boss. Spike treated everyone the same, the big shots and the factory workers. He often came into First Aid (a sounding board place for many) to find out the general complaints workers had in order to make Copeland's a better place to work for everyone. Even in his position, he acted as an ordinary man, which made him extraordinary.

I am grateful he took the time to visit with me recently.

There is one word for Spike: special.

Mary & family,
So sorry to hear of 'Spike's' passing. I worked in Human Resources at Copeland w/Spike and he definitely made the job more enjoyable. Always had something nice to say. Mary, you were our coach in 'Block S' and always made it interesting and fun. May it help your family to know that all of us who knew 'Spike' thought a lot of him and were made better because of that friendship. Know that he is watching all of you down from heaven and keeping you surrounded by his love.

To Christa, Mary, Stephanie, and Michael. My heart goes out to all of you during this most difficult time. I have so many fond memories of all of us hanging out at your house during our teenage and college years. I hope you can find some solace in knowing that he is at peace and was able to pass with the knowledge that you are all healthy and able to be together to support one another. He was so proud of his family and it was very sweetly obvious that all the grandchildren had him at their beck and call. Sending much love and prayers to the entire family.

I worked with Spike at Copeland from the time I graduated high school until I left in the mid-90s. He was a mentor and sounding board regardless of the many departments I worked in during my tenure at Copeland. I feel like I grew up with Christa, Stephanie, and Michael through the stories he would tell me. It was very clear his family meant everything to him.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.

Family & all.....Just had an amazing experience driving to Sidney around 10:40 on Tuesday morning. I was listening to "Sterling" on 700-WLW and he was mentioning notable people who had recently passed. At the end he included Spiros Jannides along with enough detail that I knew he meant the Sidney version. Sterling had some very nice things to say. I'm not sure how these two knew each other but it was really neat.

To Mary, Michael, Christa and Stephanie...

My heart felt condolences to each of you as well your extended families. Spiros was a wonderful man who made me feel comfortable whenever we got to spend time together. I've been fortunate to know your family for most of my life and I am thankful to have been able to know Spiros. He was able to live a very full and rich life. Still, departed too soon. I wish I could be with you all during this difficult time. Know that you are in Nilou's and my hearts. Love, Jesse.

Christmas 1952 Spiros arrived in Rice Lake,WI. He became a member of the class of 1953. Everyone enjoyed the new arrival from Corfu. Mr. Kramer, our English/Latin teacher lived with his uncle and aunt so Spiros immediately became acclimated to Wisconsin. He became a Badger and so did I as our friendship continued for years. We had the opportunity to celebrate his 80th birthday in Ohio and also had fun times in Rice Lake at class reunions. We had the joy of eating in the wonderful SPOT restaurant and learning the history of Sidney. As I write this note I know that Spike certainly loved his Mary, his children and his grandchildren as well as other family members. He ALWAYS thought about others. My last letter from him was an article from the Sidney Daily News, a tribute for a friend and classmate written by Carl Mann, a classmate of Mary. Spiros loved Mary! Christmas Day. . .Mary, Spiros and the entire family, WHAT BLESSINGS YOU ARE TO THE WORLD!!
