James Richard (Dick) Moloney, age 92 of Sidney, died February 27, 2015 at Wilson Memorial Hospital.

Dick is survived by his children, Ann Herrman (Thom), Calleen Moloney (George Meyer), Mike Moloney (Carley Ingram), and Pat Moloney (Trina); eight grandchildren: Chris Bowers, Kathleen Bowers, Kevin Bowers (Emily), John Moloney, Dan Moloney, Cat Moloney, Samantha Moloney and Amber Moloney; a great-grandson Harrison Bowers.

Dick was born November 13, 1922 to Frank and Elizabeth (Rable) Moloney. Dick grew up on the family farm on Deam Rd in Orange Township outside of Sidney. He was the last survivor of his 5 siblings: Frank Moloney, Betty Dinsmore, Bill Moloney, Tom Moloney, and Mary Mikolajewski.

Dick started school in a one room schoolhouse on McCloskey School Rd. The next year he moved on the newly built Orange Township Elementary School. Dick subsequently attended Sidney High School where he played on the football team and graduated 1941.

In March 1943 Dick followed the example of his brother Bill and enlisted in the Army. After basic training in Seattle, Dick was briefly stationed in Northern Africa. He later traveled by ship through the Suez Canal and had an extended posting in India, where he served as a medic and waited for the US invasion of Japan.  Following the surrender of Japan, Dick continued his journey around the globe and landed back in the Seattle where he was discharged in March of 1946.

Back from the war, Dick farmed with his father and went to school in Hobart appliance repair.  Dick also rekindled his relationship with Kate Madigan, and Dick and Kate were married on April 24, 1948, in Troy, Ohio.

The couple moved to Toledo, where Dick worked for Hobart and Kate worked as a nurse. In 1952, Dick took  advantage of an  opportunity to rent a farm on McCloskey School Rd. Dick now not only lived on a farm almost adjacent to his parents, but he was also sleeping in the same room where he had been born thirty years earlier.

Dick made his living and raised his four children on this farm for the next 17 years.  He had a special role in raising Pat so that Kate could go to work at Wilson Memorial hospital. During this period Dick was elected Orange Township Trustee, served on the Shelby county Democratic Central committee, and served as commander of the Sidney American Legion.  He was also a member of the VFW and the 40&8 veteran’s organization.

In 1969, Dick injured is back and his doctors ordered that he quit farming. Dick found a second career at Ferguson Construction in Sidney. Dick spent the next 17 years operating a backhoe and other equipment.

Dick took up golf after retirement, shot a hole in one on number 3 at Shelby Oaks in Sidney in 2001, and played regularly until he was ninety. He also volunteered as a Big Brother with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Shelby County.

In May of 1988, at age 61, Kate Moloney died. Dick and Kate had been married 40 years. He met Anne Spoltman in 1994, and they loved and supported each other for 20 years.

Dick moved into Dorothy Love Retirement Community in January of 2013. While at Dorothy Love he enjoyed many visits and trips in the country with his children, his nieces and nephews and Anne’s daughter Jeri Van Horn.

Dick Moloney lived a long rich life and brought warmth and humor to every relationship. Dick was at peace with his death. He will be missed.

i am very saddened to learn of Dick's passing. He, Kate and their children were a huge part of my childhood in Orange Township. I enjoyed many special moments at their family farm. Dick was a warm, gentle, and humourous man. A true friend and help to everyone who knew him. He was also a wonderful dad, having raised, along with Kate, beautiful and exceptional children. I extend my love and sympathy to you, Ann, Calleen, Mike, and Pat.
